Attracting & Retaining Brisbane's Top Tech Talent - What You Need To Know in 2023

Jul 26, 2023

Calling all Brisbane talent acquisition teams!

Are you looking for some new tech talent? Want to know how to attract the best of the best?

Our latest Candidate Motivators Report is your golden ticket to success. It’s got all the insider information on the trends and drivers that potential employees are looking for in 2023.

If you thought things were just the same as 2022 well, not quite.

With 44% of people surveyed changing jobs in the last year and 48% currently planning to change jobs, now is the time to make sure you’re geared up to be attracting top talent.

Want to know exactly what the Brisbane candidate market is after?

We’ll give you a little hint - 88% of females surveyed agreed that non-monetary benefits are important when choosing an employer.

And the winner is ….

Coming in at number one is supporting a work-life balance!

As we see an increasing tendency towards hybrid and remote workplaces, this doesn’t come as a big surprise. When we asked respondents what their top concern for their work life was for the next 12 months, the people of Brisbane came back with a resounding, we want balance.

While people are still interested in a good salary and some upskilling on the side, these days we’ve all come to realise there is more to life than just work.

If you’re ready to dive into the talent market, take a minute to assess how you’re currently showcasing this to potential candidates.

Nothing like starting your morning with an almond latte

Just as we saw in Melbourne and Sydney, the need for flexible working arrangements has easily maintained its position, coming in at number two yet again for 2023.

In fact, 52% of the Brisbane males we surveyed said that flexible working was their number one driving factor when looking for an employer - it’s clearly still a top priority among candidates.

This really goes hand-in-hand with work-life balance. However, just as people have different opinions on how much work is enough work, so too do they have different ideas on what flexibility means to them.

For some it might be not having to get up at the crack of dawn to fit in their morning gym sesh. For others it’s simply having time to fulfil their caffeine needs with an almond latte from their local watering hole.

Whatever it looks like, how can we best accommodate these different needs?

We still need our tomatoes

Like we said, people are becoming more aware of the fact they want to better integrate work around their daily lives, but they also still need to make a living.

We’re all feeling the pinch in this economy (have you seen the price of tomatoes lately), so having a good pay cheque is still a must - which is why it comes in at number three.

As well as a good fortnightly payment into their bank accounts, Brisbane candidates are on the lookout for an employer who can give them the total package - we’re talking benefits. What kind of leave entitlements can they get? Maybe throw in a gym membership?

The people of Brisbane are looking for a workplace that will not only support them financially, but also their wellbeing. By helping people thrive outside of work, watch them bring those good vibes to work.

Something we didn’t see coming

This one was a little left of field and something that we didn’t see coming out of Sydney or Melbourne - the need for strong management and leadership.

The people of Brisbane always know how to surprise us and we loved this! We think more candidates should be making a fuss about it.

With 60% of respondents agreeing that a poor relationship with their manager and/or colleagues can contribute to them choosing to change roles, having strong leaders and committed team members can have a huge impact.

Are you showcasing excellent leadership and management to potential candidates? Maybe it’s time to shout about it a little louder.

No man left behind

Once you get that talent in the door, how are you nurturing them to stay?

With 39% of respondents telling us they used their training budget in the last 12 months, but that 27% weren’t even offered any budget for upskilling, the message is loud and clear - they want career progression.

These days people switch jobs as regularly as Netflix releases a new TV series, and with the digital age demanding we learn more and more new skills, employees' first point of call for support is their employer.

When we asked the people of Brisbane what their main concern for their work life was over the next 12 months, upskilling came in at number three.

Candidates can’t afford to get left behind and if they feel they can’t keep up with the trends and progress in their career at their current workplace, they might just go find somewhere where they can.

This is where employers have the chance to really set themselves apart from the competition. Only 24% of our Brisbane respondents were planning to change jobs within the same organisation, which means there is plenty of room for businesses to grow.

How are you looking after your employee’s careers and are you telling potential candidates about the opportunities you can provide them?

How would we sum up this year’s findings?

If we had to give one overarching piece of advice to take away from this year's report, it would be that tailoring benefits and offerings to potential candidates is always going to be a winner.

Whether it’s upskilling options, flex time or career progression opportunities, there is no one size fits all approach. It’s all about personalisation.
