DCJ works to enable everyone's right to access justice and help for families through early intervention and inclusion, with benefits for the whole community. Stronger Communities is focussed on achieving safe, just, inclusive and resilient communities by providing services that are effective and responsive to community needs.

The Role

Develop and deliver management of complex media inquiries, preparation of media responses, media releases and ministerial announcements, media campaigns and media issues management. Liaise with DCJ staff, external stakeholders, Ministerial Offices and courts to deliver effective and relevant media services in a manner that reflects organisational priorities and upholds and promotes the reputation of DCJ.

Key Accountabilities

  • Proactively identify issues before they emerge and draft holding statements.
  • Assess emerging issues and media enquiries to formulate and implement responses and reactive media campaigns.
  • Provide specialist advice and support to Ministerial Offices, senior departmental executives and specialists to support them in implementing media strategies and managing issues.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with a wide range of media organisations, and foster positive relationships with journalists covering DCJ matters to facilitate effective and timely issues management and positive media representation.
  • Provide advice and technical support across the Communications Branch on the media management aspects of DCJ campaigns, events and programs.
  • Work alongside DCJ's social media team to ensure consistent and effective public messaging.

Key Challenges

  • Dealing with rapidly emerging issues within critical timeframes, appropriately handling conflicting deadlines and working well under pressure. This also includes working in a complex environment of sensitive content and issues across broad policy areas and multiple portfolios to ensure that media releases and responses to issues take account of the sensitivity, confidentiality and political implications of the issue.
  • Working with a wide range of managers across the organisation with multiple demands on their time and with varying skill in media and issues management to provide the required support. This also includes working with court staff and members of the judiciary, where appropriate, on relevant media issues.
  • Maintaining currency in knowledge and understanding of DCJ programs, policies and developments and keeping up to date with an extensive range of NSW Government strategies and announcements to ensure effective and accurate responses to emerging issues.
  • Developing and maintaining media strategies that help protect and improve the profile of DCJ across media and in the community. Developing multimedia skills to produce photographs and videos for social media.
