Assistant Project Director (Construction)

Our NSW Government client, the NSW Department of Education are looking for an Assistant Project Director to join the School Infrastructure Division. In this role you will support and assist the Project Director, working with project teams through project governance and formation to deliver major capital works outcomes. On occasion, you will manage non-complex projects with guidance from Project Directors and Senior Project Directors.

End Date: 12 months project
Daily pay rate: Between $550 - $650 + Super p.d.
Location: Sydney CBD

Key accountabilities:

• Support and assist with the project delivery interfaces with contract management service providers, design teams and building contractors for SINSW while managing the delivery of designated projects to specified time, cost and within a quality framework, and providing accurate and timely reports, advice and recommendations on individual projects and programs.
• Support and assist and with the evaluation of the progress and performance of designated capital works projects (>$20m) using the existing program management tracking and monitoring systems, guidelines, policies, and processes.
• Support and assist with the execution of the Community Engagement Plan (CEP) for the project that includes, key schools community stakeholder relationships, managing community expectations, providing timely information to impacted stakeholders, addressing and correcting misinformation in the public domain, reducing the risk of project delays caused by negative third party interventions and to leave a positive legacy in each community.
• Support and assist with project procurement including engaging consultants and contractors responsible for delivering individual projects and ensuring best quality services for NSW Schools. Ensure probity processes relating to the issues concerning procurement, contracting arrangements and outcomes are in place, undertaken and reviewed. This includes managing and reporting on the payment of consultants and contractors in accordance with legislation and contracts.
• Support and assist the project team to ensure the correct statutory planning approval path is identified and undertaken for individual projects and programs including consultation with local Councils and relevant consent authorities.
• Support and assist the development of effective partnership with clients, service providers, consultants and suppliers all phases of projects from inception to completion, including the identification and effective management of emerging risks that might impede the successful achievement of projects outcome. This includes overseeing and monitoring scope, time, cost and quality of projects from inception to handover.
• Support and assist with accurate and timely reports on the progress of the programs as required to the Senior Project Director, the Executive Steering Committee, and the Minister's Office.

Challenges associated with the role:

• Delivering projects within defined timeframes in a commercial environment while coordinating and advising regional/dispersed Asset Management Units in capital and infrastructure project and program management, and associated reporting.
• Managing the ongoing implementation of government policies and contribute to the development and implementation of the School Infrastructure Strategy e.g. around the aggregation of purchase of asset services to achieve value for money and reduce the cost of doing business.
• Setting and managing the expectations of NSW School communities exposed to Capital Works and ensuring school communities have confidence in the processes and systems being used to deliver the projects.

About you:

• Possess relevant tertiary and/or post graduate qualifications in Construction, Engineering, Project Management or related fields.
• Proven experience in the successful delivery of construction projects to a value of more than $15 million.
• Able to act with a high level of autonomy.
• 5 + years of relevant project planning and delivery experience.
• Proven experience in long duration delivery projects that had clear objectives, potential for conflicts and a number of key influential stakeholders.
• An ability to respond to unpredictable risks and manage a number of simultaneous/overlapping phases across multiple projects.
• Current driver's licence.
