How to negotiate job offers like a pro, so you don’t compromise salary, benefits or remote work

Dec 14, 2022

Negotiating doesn’t come naturally to all of us. But it’s an important skill to hone, so you don’t compromise the non-negotiables you decided on at the beginning of your job search. When you learn how to ask for what you want, there’s a better chance you can have your cake and eat it too!

Here are three things to consider before negotiating your next job offer.

It’s not just about the money

While we’d all love to be showered in premium salary dollars that would award us our [insert desired luxury car of choice], the reality is, there’s a lot more to a job offer than salary alone. Especially today, where candidates rank flexible work and wellbeing benefits almost equal to salary.

An average salary might be complemented by an above average career development program and financial coaching, extra days off, shorter days, most days working remotely. Alternatively, an eye-watering salary may come with extra-long days, weekend work, and little time/support for career development. Which is why it’s always helpful to consider an offer from the perspective of Total Compensation – salary, benefits and perks.

Before you enter any negotiation, get clear on what is most important to you. What are you willing to sacrifice to gain another?

Compare against the market before negotiating

Market research helps you assess how your job offer compares to market rates and benefits, as well as your current package (no point jumping ship for less than!). You also want to avoid marching in hot headed with an unrealistic list of demands unmatched anywhere else in your industry or speciality. Unless you’re a bona fide unicorn, of course.

Be reasonable

In volatile and unpredictable economic environments, it’s sometimes impossible for employers to negotiate higher salaries. If the money’s not there, it’s not there. But they may be able to go large on stock options or negotiate other benefits you value, like extra time off or structured career development and progression. Keep your mind on the big picture and return to the total compensation package for a needed reality check.

If a job offer really isn’t providing the benefits, salary and/or hybrid or remote work arrangements you’re looking for, do not settle without first asking for what you most want. If you don’t ask, you don’t know what can be negotiated, and you could end up making a poor career decision you’ll regret.
